Battery Test Failed

So while I had my 2016 228i in for an oil change, I took advantage of the free battery test the dealership offered, and per them, the battery failed the test.

They could not show me much data, the file only noted:

“ Charging current of the battery after 10 minutes charging amounts to 1.8 A

Price quoted for replacing and registering the battery is $528.30 plus tax

The car starts perfectly fine and has never giving me the battery discharge message, so I am wondering if this really needs to be replaced.

The battery is the original, but the car only has 34,000 miles on it

Thoughts?

That is way too much money to replace a battery. Find a good indie shop and get a second opinion.

Battery is probably good. But if you decide to get one, www.Batterymart.com is great.

I'd be pretty skeptical if its not long cranking or giving the low battery warning. My battery is 7 years old now and its still fine. The AGM batteries last a long time.

Free test? They are charging me $140 for the diagnostic on top of the battery replacement and labour.

Yeah, a BMW dealership here in Dallas is(was) offering that special when I took my car in for an oil change.

Try BMW North America, they have dealer related part specials. The best I have seen with taxes and fees is $430 with the coupon and registration. However there is an app you can buy Bimmerlink that will allow you to pair a $20 obdII with their app for $32 and you can buy a compatible battery for much less and register it yourself. Takes only 5 minutes. All depends on the length of warranty for me. BMW batteries are only warrantied pro rated for 24 months. Many other brands cary longer warranties. Best of luck!

Finally replaced my original battery, car was built April of 2014 but when they removed the battery it was dated 2013. I drive very little and put a battery tender on once a week but twice in the last 6 weeks it would just stay red ( no green blinking) and in the morning it would show charged. If I drove it when I shut it down I got a yellow Not Charged warning. BMW tested it and it had battery covid and was dying. 7 1/2 years I guess I got my moneys worth. Had a $100 off coupon but it was still $360 installed with tax.

Which battery would you recommend from there?

Here's the post where I describe what I did with my 2014 M235i.

https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show...00&postcount=3

You can't find a battery better than the Odyessy. Since I bought it at BatteryMart.com it seems the price has risen and there is no free shipping. FCP Euro has it with free shipping and with that comes the FCP Lifetime warranty which if you keep the car longer than 5-7 years, may come into play.

I also found the fitment charts unreliable for at least my m235i. The Odyessy website has the specs for their batteries including accurate sizes. And now that I look, the Odyessy website has it with free shipping too. But the FCP Euro buy is a no brainer.

The Odyssey I put in my MINI died
suddenly within 2 years for no good
reason, so I went to a Diehard Platinum
AGM last year.

Did you have the battery correctly registered in the Mini as the correct type and capacity when it was first installed?

My particular MINI (2009 JCW Clubman)
doesn’t have an IBS module and therefore
didn’t need to be registered.
I did it anyway with my scan tool so the
replacement date and battery specs are in there.

Mine has a three year warranty. Did you contact Odyssey?

No.
Couldn’t get one locally and didn’t want
to wait for a replacement to be
shipped with no battery in my daily
driver in the mean time.
We have 2 cars and 2 drivers and
need both all the time (usually get a
loaner when one is in for service or repairs).
I also would have had to pay shipping
on a 50# package and if approved,
maybe get a replacement with only 1
year remaining warranty on it.
