Not a looser
BMWs depreciate so fast it makes my head spin. The trade in value on my 2017 230 6 speed is pocket change. But I have driven it 95,000 happy miles with very little maintenance needed. Depreciation + maintenance + fuel comes to about 40 cents/mile.
Going forward, maintenance may not shoot up and depreciation has just about run its gruesome course so a few more thousand miles may still be happy ones. Fingers crossed. |

I saw a low-mileage, higher-end used 5 Series at a dealer that just in depreciation alone cost $3.69 per mile.
In many ways, there's a strong argument to be made for buying BMW's cheapest models.

Manual transmissions really don't get appreciated by book value either. If going private sale based on "enthusiast" pricing, it would fetch more than a wholesaler.
On average there's less than 3 manual 2 series (non-M2) nationwide (Canada) for sale. That has to be worth something. That and the fact you can't get a new non-m2 manual. |

Trade In value is always a eye opener for most vehicle owners. I buy luxury cars that are 3 years old, so most the depreciation is already absorbed. This holds true for about every car brand but Porsche sports car models, the 911 and the previous generation 981 Cayman/Boxser, hold their value pretty well, especially if a manual, and sport chrono.

If you want to trade to buy something new, you have to negotiate and stay by your guns. You would be surprise what they could do to make a sale and furthermore if you are a BMW loyalty customer. Of course, it needs to be in top condition with no mods.
