I guess I just don't understand why the number of cylinders matters given the same performance figures since it will be lighter and have better fuel economy. Especially given how annoying M owners are about it being a "drivers car", it doesn't make sense to desire something solely because of a purely meaningless data point of 6 instead of 4. I think at this point in time in engineering a 6 cylinder will probably be the preferred choice by BMW due to power delivery (given current technology), but if that decision is made it will have nothing to do with this poll or enthusiast sentiment. It will be because it is the best option. That's what makes a BMW a BMW. If people honestly would not buy it because of the number of cylinders perhaps you should check out a Mustang...

No but really.. i6. Not a useful comparison. That was an NA engine in a lightweight go-cart. The M2 will still be a whale in comparison.

Yes, but if turbocharged I4 is low revving it sounds crap, Bmw knows that and maybe add speakers to give the feel of real engine sound, like S14. But Mini WRC whit I4turbo 1.6L Bmw motorsport engine sounds really good, but redline is 8500rpm.

I think the new Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG holds the class record so far (175 Bhp / liter). 350 Hp and 332 ft/lbs out of only two liters displacement.

What about a small NA V8?
If BMW puts a detuned version of this engine in the M2, I will run down to my local BMW dealer to put down a deposit right now... |

Light, compact I-4, please. Twin, if need be, just make it high RPM friendly.
To those suggesting that an M2 must have more displacement than 'lesser' 2-Series models, please see the E30. |

Indeed powerfullest turbocharged production car is Mitsubishi Evo FQ400 it has 2.0L engine and 400bhp. Not FWD A45 AMG E: Evo FQ400 specs : Engine rated 410 PS (300 kW; 400 hp) and 542 N·m (400 lb·ft) of torque and 3 year warranty Last edited by Tåst; 05-01-2013 at 04:32 PM.. |

I would consider a M2 with an I6 and around 360 hp, but would i sell my 1m for a M2? I don't know yet!! But when i read, the M4 will have 'only' 420 hp, so i don't think,a M2 will get 360 hp!!! I think the CLA 45 AMG will be a bestseller in this class!!! But 4WD only for the AMG!!

They will use the lightest weight engine they can that meets their cost, emissions, and performance targets. Certainly they are capable of building something along the lines of the new Mercedes AMG M133 4 cylinder, but we'll have to see if that fits the budget or not.
By the way, Mercedes is also developing a 4L V8 (M177) with the potential to deliver power density similar to the M133. |

I have faith in BMW ///M
But... it needs to be BETTER than the M235i and be lighter than the e46M3 (since trying to match is the current direction for the M3/4). Kind of a tough bill for the M division. I hope that the next gen BMWs fix the current generation water pump, fuel pump, and carbon buildup issues. |

You have answered your own question ! The number of cylinders in itself is not the issue. How that will translate into how the car drives, feels, its power delivery to use your words, turbo lag, sound, throttle sensitivity, sound, rev range, rev buildup etc.. are the issues we are concerned about. There is no doubt that given current technology, the I6 will have the advantage in all these categories (assuming the current technology is applied to either engine). The only categories the 4 pot will be better at are: weight, weight distribution and fuel consumption. If you told me that BMW was spending billions of Euros on R&D to develop an I4 that would equal or better an I6 in these categories mentioned above, then I would absolutely have no reservations and favor the I4. The reality is we all know that this is not the case. |

I don't see how the M2 could surpass the existing 135i without an I6 turbocharged. I also don't see how BMW can make their M2 more than 340hp without seriously injuring the M3/4 sales.
That been said, if they do manage to build an I4 turbo that can be as smooth and torquey across the range, then I don't see why I wouldn't consider it. It can only make the car lighter and more nimble, not to mention the fuel economy which is not something in which my current N55 excels. The only drawbacks would be the sound and the tuneability. With the next gen M3 being downsized from 8 cylinders to 6 turbocharged, and having the same power output as the current one, I wouldn't be surprised if the next M2 will be an I4 turbo with 340hp, same output as the 1M. |

I would say the only reason myself personally am leaning towards the I6 is because I do not believe that they will spend the money to give us an I4 that can match the 6 in the performance and feel categories that matter. I do see your point though that most people who would not even consider the I4 probably feel that way for the wrong reasons |

On a different note, that Orange render on the home page link to this thread is absolutely gorgeous.. I am really hoping the car ends up looking close to that

Man, talk about controversy when the 3-Series got a a I4 and the M5/M6 got turbo engines. I can see this place going crazy if BMW goes Turbo I4. I know the CLA45 AMG is going turbo 4 but I think BMW should keep the turbo I6 for performance models while the rest can go I4.

Its not Chemistry, the M5/M6 have the V8, the M3/M4 will get the 6 cylinder engine instead of the old V8, which means the M2 should get a 4 cylinder engine!!!!!! Make it I4 with 330-350 and it will be great.
